I’ve needed a while to digest how I truly felt about The Unmaking of June Farrow before I posted any sort of review, because it left me in a puddle of goo on my sofa, with tears filled eyes, saying “oh my god?”.
What Young has done here is, not only create my favourite read of 2023, but also put together the most beautifully haunting tale of a devastatingly, magically complex family, all bundled up in the most perfect small town setting where I want to move to, immediately.
It had been a while since I closed a book and had that moment of ‘What on earth? What on earth did I just read? What? How? It’s over?’
What is the book about? It’s a stunningly penned story about a long line of Farrow women who all, inevitably, give into their heart breaking family history of… well, madness.
June’s felt it coming on for a while now - how else can she explain seeing things that aren’t there? Hearing voices when no one is around? And why does she keep seeing a big, red door?
I really don’t want to give too much away about this one. Go in blind! Just go in blind and see where it takes you. I really don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
I hope you enjoy it as much as me. If you enjoyed Spells For Forgetting, you’ll love this one too!
