I really wanted to love it but I just didn’t.

I appreciate the topics explored and thought it was done well. The lore and history of the island were well crafted and I liked how central the literature in question was not only to the story but to Effy as well. The writing was poetic and dreary and the setting suitable grim and creepy.

However I couldn’t get into it. I was slow and honestly kind of predictable. I guessed the ending pretty early on and after that the story failed to keep me interested and I just felt like I was waiting for the reveal. The ending gave me all the answers I was expecting and was interesting enough. The characters were fine but nothing special for me and though their romance was nice it didn’t pull me in.

I know I’m in the minority here - and I’m happy people are enjoying it! - but I think this story is going to get immediately washed from my memory like the sea it’s so focussed on. It just wasn’t for me 🤷‍♀️

A bit about me… I love all things morally grey and magical!

My favourite series is Red Rising and I’m sucker for found family.

I drink way too much tea and live out my fantasy dreams by visiting medieval festivals and doing archery!

If I’m not reading you’ll find me writing my book or dreaming of far away places.
