The world was great - I love the idea of the different Houses and their magics. The Bonesmiths were interesting and I thought the world and magic was introduced really well so it was easy to understand. The history was interesting and though I would have liked a lot more House politics we did get to see some of the rivalries and dynamics.
I wasn’t a massive fan of the MC. She was fine but very predictable- after the first chapter you guess immediately see what her character arc will be and unsurprisingly it followed exactly as expected. Similarly the romance was predictable. This made the book feel on the younger end of YA especially since some more interesting themes were only lightly touched on. I wanted more from it as the world set it up to be more interesting and grittier than it was.
Even the plot and the end twists were easier predicted. It didn’t live up to its potential for me. If you’re looking for a story with undead and a journey then this might suit you but it wasn’t as complex or as in depth as I prefer.
I did, however, love Leo. He was the standout for me.
