I loved the concept of this one though I don’t think i was really in the right reading mood for it so didn’t enjoy it as much I wanted.
I loved Zizzi and wished we had more of him - and though I liked the twist, it was also sad.
The concept of the academy and fighting revenants and all the inner politics, was really cool though I do wish we’d gotten more time at the academy and a closer look at the training and magic. The setting and magic and the inspiration from Chinese mythology was excellent and woven into the story well.
I wanted a little more of the romance and I found that I just couldn’t like Yiran that much because I hated that he thought the magic was his, as though she wouldn’t want it back and his whole goal was to find a way to keep it with no regard for how that would feel to her. And then he was mad about it?! Like, what did you expect. And I wanted her to stand up for herself more.
Still, it was a great urban fantasy with a fresh take on things, I think I just struggled a little with my reading mood and found it had to keep my attention.
