This was everything I wanted from the sequel of Foul Lady Fortune. The politics are rife with problems and the Japanese invasion is poised. I adore the setting, the turmoil and struggle of this time period is brought to the story really well. With all our characters having a part to play in the war, I was deeply invested in seeing how their stories would play out. The story took some twists, all of which I enjoyed and gave us the cameos I’d been wanting! With spies, fugitives, double agents, assassins we get an action packed plot as well as deliverance on the promised romances set up in FLF. This story had a lot of heart in it and I thought it was the perfect ending to the Secret Shanghai books. Rosalind and Orion have got to be my favourites of this world but I really loved the other characters that were explored and seeing their storylines completed as well. A great (if stressful) read!
