This was an excellent sequel to Belladonna. We get more of the gothic goodness we loved so much in book 1, another high stakes mystery and the interruption of Fate in their lives.
I found the mystery took a back seat to Fate’s shenanigans but I quickly became invested in Fate and his history. The role he played wasn’t the one I wanted but I loved how it ended. I really felt for Fate and under all his bravado all he wants is his lost love. This whole storyline elevated the role of these supernatural beings; rather than having just Death as an unknowable figure of the beyond the world expanded to show there’s more of them. Signa gets unwilling pulled into Fate’s plans and Blythe stumbled into it as well. I throughly enjoyed seeing them navigate this. And I absolutely LOVED having Blythe’s pov! The mystery was interesting and different from Belladonna. We still have the same community of characters so we get to delve a little deeper into their lives. The murderer was unexpected but also perfect.
Overall exactly the vibes and feeling I was hoping for. A compelling mystery with added complexity from Fate and Signa having to deal with the repercussions of what she did in Belladonna.
It really felt like Signa went full circle in this book, she knows who she is and has found the family and home she’s always wanted. It was a beautiful arc to Signa’s story though i have to say I much prefer Blythe and I’ve never been a fan of Death as a romantic interest (I know I’m in the minority with this) so I wasn’t so much invested in the romance aspect of them. Still, I enjoyed this a lot!
