If you want more Joan on the run, heartache and some big reveals then you won’t be disappointed!
It was so great to be back with these characters but it hurt me just as much as it did Joan that she was living in a new timeline where Aaron and Nick didn’t remember what she meant to them. I don’t usually like amnesia and got a little frustrated that Joan wouldn’t tell people the whole truth however overall I thought it was done really well and I liked seeing her develop new relationships with them and how the old timeline overshadowed her feelings a lot.
We get monster inns, monster court members and time travel again and these are always just so fun! This time Joan has a better grasp of monsters and time travel and I throughly enjoyed seeing her interact with it all again. She falls in the same pattern but it’s all turned on it’s head. Aaron is my favourite so I wish we’d had a little more time with him (though it worked perfectly as is for the story) and less Nick (#teamaaron) because even though it’s a new timeline I can’t forget what past Nick did. It’s such an interesting dynamic to follow, and Vanessa did a great job of exploring Joan’s complex feelings.
The plot was interesting and kept me invested, the reveals brought the story to a new level, I could never have guessed the true reason behind everything and I loved learning more about the antagonist. The ending was a huge cliffhanger but I was prepared and whilst it was painful to leave it like that it sets the next book up well and I’m already so excited to see Joan and the gang tackle their biggest calamity yet.
