I put this off because I didn’t think I’d like it but It was completely different from what I was expecting! I ended up really enjoying it, it had an epic fantasy feel but without the pressure of a long book/ series. The characters were dynamic and I loved the format of having past and present chapters - the past chapters slowly gave context to the present and allowed a slow reveal of the layers behind Kai’s present situation. The past chapters were my favourite and I could have easily read a whole series about that plot but it was fun to have all the complexity of an epic fantasy in a shorter standalone book. The motley crew that developed in the present was a delight and I’d happily read more of their adventures. Definitely a surprising read but a worthwhile one.
And for those of you romance minded people… It doesn’t have any romance besides on screen couples who are already together.
