Sometimes a book comes along and it almost consumes you rather than the other way around… Jaded by Ela Lee is one of those books.
From the first page, right through to the last Ela takes you on a journey about cultural identity, race, gender, misogyny, sexism, power, politics, consent and so much more. At times it’s a really tough read, whether that’s through the uncomfortableness of racial slurs, the pain of Ceyda’s (Jade’s) struggles or the facing of what it means to be an immigrant women in a male dominated corporate world.
The writing style was easy to read, and you really feel all the emotions along with Ceyda (and other characters), in a way that not many authors achieve.
This book prompts thoughts, and conversations, ones that are so desperately needed. I really think, and hope, that Jaded will go on to be praised both by awards and readers. I can say for sure it’s a story that will be remembered long after the final page. This is an incredible debut novel and I personally cannot wait to see what else is to come from Ela Lee.
Obviously this book comes with content warnings of racism, sexism and rape/sexual assault. But if they’re topics you’re okay reading about - I would highly recommend this read.
