I’ve previously read another book by this author and I just love her writing. The Night ends with Fire has a fantastic writing style that will compel you and grab your attention from the beginning to the end.
I liked the Mulan retelling and appreciate how realistic it felt if you add the four magical elemental creatures and how negative they can be on their vessels. There were quite a lot of court politics and schemes and I think that will forever be my weakness - I just love intrigues! I liked Meilin, I liked how she didn’t wait for others to make things happen and it was quite nice to see her character growth. However, I am not sure about any of the male characters - I felt like none could truly support her for her which made me sad.
I am also not sure about the ending. I understand that she committed a “crime” but I sincerely disliked her “friends” for turning on her just because she’s a woman - like, grow pair please. It also annoyed me a little bit on how Meilin just couldn’t win anything no matter what she did or what she accomplished. I wish there was at least one guy that would show in actions his full support for her and defend her. They were all ‘powerless’ it was painful - made me wonder if they would have gone the extra mile if she was a he.
